I love being a Camas, WA family photographer, especially when I get to help you document your baby’s first year of life, AND your first year as parents. This sweet milestone session was full of the kind of moments that first time parents never want to forget: gummy smiles with a couple teeth poking through, sweet baby features that continue to change, and two first-time parents completely in love with their little one.

The whirlwind of your baby’s first year is such an important time to document through family photos. At one year, the newborn haze has lifted just enough for parents to settle into somewhat of a rhythm, but their baby is still changing nearly every day. This outdoor first year milestone session in Camas, WA captured such a sweet season for this family: full of wonder, joy, and so much love for their little boy.

We met at a nearby park later in the morning to work around baby’s nap schedule, which ended up being perfect. He was happy, cuddly, and so smiley throughout the session. Our lighting was dreamy thanks to a large oak tree that gave us shade from the springtime sunshine. Our backdrop was beautiful soft light filtering through the branches and lush green grass. The entire photo gallery feels natural and relaxed.

I absolutely love when families choose to celebrate their baby’s first birthday with a full family session. It creates space to document not only what baby looked like at this stage, but also what life felt like together during this season of parenthood.

One of the best decisions we made was choosing a later morning session time that worked well with their baby’s nap schedule. Because he was rested and happy, we were able to capture so many smiley, playful moments throughout the session without anyone feeling rushed or stressed.

A Dreamy Oak Tree Family Session

The oak trees at this park created the most beautiful backdrop for their outdoor first year milestone photos. The soft greens, filtered sunlight, and textured grass gave the entire gallery a dreamy, organic feel that perfectly matched their gentle energy as a family.

Since this was a full session, we had plenty of time for variety. We captured a mix of candid moments and frame-worthy portraits with everyone smiling at the camera. I always aim to give families both — the emotional in-between moments and the classic images grandparents will immediately want framed on their walls.

Some of my favorite images from this session were the simplest ones: the three of them sitting together at the base of a massive oak tree while their baby grinned up at his parents completely content in their arms.

The Sweetest Baby Details

One of my favorite parts of photographing babies around the one year mark is documenting all the little details parents never want to forget.

At this age, babies still have so much of their baby softness while beginning to grow into their toddler features. I made sure to capture the tiny front teeth just starting to poke through, his impossibly long eyelashes, and the sweet profile of his face that his parents know so well right now.

I also photographed his little feet and toes in the grass — the kind of image that may seem small now, but years later will instantly transport his parents back to this exact season.

These detail images often become some of the most treasured photographs in a gallery because they preserve the tiny things that change far too quickly during the first year.
