If you’ve ever wondered whether a holiday mini session or a full family photo session is the better fit for your family, you’re not alone. Every fall, I hear this question from families in Vancouver, WA and the Portland area. The answer truly depends on your goals, your season of life, and how you want your photo session to feel.
Both options are valuable. They just serve different purposes.
Let’s break it down in a way that helps you choose with confidence (and less stress).

Holiday mini photo sessions are short, themed photo sessions offered on specific dates each year. These are often held in a curated location, like a tree farm, studio setup, or seasonal outdoor spot.
Mini sessions are:
I absolutely welcome newborns and young toddlers to my mini sessions. That said, the most important thing to know going in is the time constraint. With a mini session, we move efficiently. There’s less room for warming, breaks and super unique photos.
For many families, that’s totally fine. For others, it can feel rushed, and I never want you to feel too stressed.

A full family session gives us time and space — and that’s where personalities really begin to shine.
Full sessions allow for:
This is often the better choice for families with:
With more time, I’m able to follow your kids’ lead, lean into curiosity and play, and capture images that feel like you — not forced or rushed.
This might surprise you, but shorter doesn’t always mean easier.
For some families, a mini session is perfect. For others (especially those navigating newborn life, toddler moods, or sensory-sensitive kids) a full session can often feel less stressful because there’s no pressure to “perform” quickly.
If you’re already thinking: “I’m not sure we’ll get the type of photos I want in 15 minutes…”
That’s often a sign a full session may be the more supportive option.
One of my favorite approaches (and what I personally do for my own family) is a mix of both.
Many families choose:
For example:
This balance allows you to document your family in a way that feels both intentional and fun.
For my own family photos, I’m always drawn to sessions that happen:
Think: your backyard, hikes at the Columbia River Gorge, a favorite wildflower field you pass often, or a familiar outdoor space where memories are already layered in.
Those images tend to feel the most meaningful over time. I love pairing that with something seasonal and joyful to send out during the holidays.
That’s completely okay and, honestly, very normal.
If you’re deciding between a holiday mini session and a full family session in Vancouver, WA, I’m always happy to talk through:
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer — just the option that best supports your family.
