This is one of the most asked questions I get as a newborn photographer, “When should I schedule my newborn session?”. Here is my advice for when to schedule your newborn photo session:
There are a couple factors to consider when booking your newborn session:
- Does the newborn photographer allow reschedules?
I offer free rescheduling for newborn photo sessions because birth and postpartum are so unpredictable. My recommendation to clients is to book their newborn session for their best guess of when the session will take place as far in advance as they can. Three to six months in advance is a good timeline. That way they are on my calendar, and I am happy to reschedule them as needed. Some photographers don’t allow reschedules or charge a rescheduling fee. Postpartum is already so stressful and busy. Offering complimentary reschedules is a small way I can help you out during this hectic time.
- What milestones do you want to capture?
Newborns seem to change DAILY. One day their eyes barely open to a squint and then all of sudden they are taking in the world, wide eyed and curious. Every baby hits these milestones at different times. If you want the teeny tiny, super sleepy kind of newborn photos, I suggest booking within 5-10 days of birth. If you want your baby to be more alert and awake, I suggest booking 10-15 days after birth. I consider newborns to be ages 1 day to 3 months. All stages of your baby are beautiful and special to photograph. You can view my portfolio to see the variety of photos I capture during family and newborn photo sessions.
