I love photographing maternity photos with toddlers. You’re eagerly awaiting your newest little love while your first baby is on the brink of becoming a big sibling. What a roller coaster of emotions 🥹
This beautiful outdoor maternity session in Camas, Washington was filled with golden evening light, tall summer grass, playful moments, and so much anticipation for baby sister’s arrival. From sweet toddler snuggles to artistic close-ups celebrating a growing baby bump, every image tells a part of this family’s story.

If you’re nervous about your maternity photos with a toddler, you’re definitely not alone! One of the biggest concerns I hear from parents is, “What if my toddler doesn’t sit still?” And I have some great news for you: they don’t have to.
My approach to family and maternity sessions is intentionally relaxed and flexible because toddlers were never meant to stand still and smile on command. Instead of trying to mold kids to a specific pose, we embrace movement, play and the child’s personality. We wander through the field, cuddle close, pick up interesting treasures, giggle together, and let your little one simply be themselves. Those are the moments that create photographs that feel genuine.

For instance, this sweet toddler boy felt a little bit shy and reserved for the majority of this maternity session. Instead of forcing specific poses and getting sad expressions and tears, we let him be a velcro baby! Our poses were a little limited, but I much rather be flexible with poses and prompts to keep everyone comfortable and happy during our photo session.
Some of my favorite images from this session happened because we followed the toddler’s pace. Tiny hands pointing to baby sister, close hugs, and quiet moments of wonder that can never be forced. Rather than expecting your child to perform, I gently guide the session with simple and playful prompts that keep everyone engaged while leaving plenty of room for authentic connection.
When the pressure to “sit still” disappears, children relax and so do parents. The result is a gallery that tells the story of your growing family, not just a collection of perfectly posed portraits.
Every pregnancy is different, and every mother deserves to feel beautiful while documenting it.
I absolutely loved using this outfit from my client closet that revealed her baby bump. Showing your bump doesn’t have to feel overly posed or uncomfortable. With thoughtful wardrobe choices, beautiful light, and gentle posing, it’s possible to create tasteful maternity photos that feel timeless, feminine, and true to you.
Whether you choose a fitted dress, flowing fabric, or something that subtly reveals your belly, the goal is never to make you feel exposed. The goal is to celebrate the incredible work your body is doing while creating images you’ll treasure for decades.
One of my favorite artistic moments from this session was photographing her baby bump nestled among the tall summer grasses. These close-up detail photographs tell such a beautiful story and create a unique way of remembering this fleeting season.

Photographing maternity sessions outdoors lets nature adds movement, texture, and emotion to every image. I do not do stiff poses. Instead, I encourage families to interact with one another. Walking hand in hand, laughing together, gently holding your baby bump, or simply watching your toddler explore. These all create photographs that feel effortless and full of life. If you’re looking for pregnancy photography inspiration, consider incorporating thoughtful detail images alongside traditional portraits.

Little moments often become the photographs families cherish most because they capture the feeling of this season of life, not just what it looked like.
Your motherhood story begins before your baby is born.
It begins in the quiet moments of talking to your baby before they’ve arrived, the way your toddler kisses and hugs your belly, and the excitement of imagining who this tiny new person will become.
Watching a curious toddler point at baby sister and wrap tiny arms around Mom’s growing belly was a beautiful reminder that this season isn’t only about pregnancy, it’s about a family growing together.
Maternity photo sessions are an important way to capture and remember this season.
Years from now, these photographs will remind this family not only what it looked like, but what it felt like to stand on the edge of such a life-changing chapter.

If you’ve been dreaming about maternity photos with your toddler, outdoor sessions are one of my favorite ways to create naturally meaningful images.
The open fields around Camas offer beautiful golden light, natural textures, and plenty of room for little ones to explore. Instead of asking children to sit perfectly still, we embrace movement and create space for genuine moments to unfold.
