Fall is one of the most loved seasons for family photos in the Vancouver, WA area, and it’s easy to see why. The light softens, the air cools, and the landscapes shift into layers of gold, green, and warm earth tones that feel timeless and cozy all at once.
Every fall, families ask the same questions:
What should we wear?
How do we prepare without overthinking it?
Let’s walk through it together — in a way that feels simple, intentional, and even a little fun.

Fall family sessions have a natural warmth to them. The colors are rich without being overpowering, and the slightly cooler weather makes it natural to play and snuggle close.
One of my favorite things about photographing families in the fall is the variety of looks we can create within a single season. Early fall feels light and golden, while later in the season brings deeper tones and a more moody, grounded feel.
There’s truly something for everyone.
Fall outfits are fun because this is the season for layers and textures. Think movement, depth, and pieces that feel comfortable enough to play in.
A few general guidelines I share with my clients:
Rather than matching exactly, aim for outfits that coordinate. This creates visual interest without feeling busy or forced. Below are a few different examples of fall family outfits. Some have neutral hues with a variety of print and textures, while others are neutral with a pop of deep blue. Both styles photograph beautifully and can add personality to your photos.

To make planning easier, I’ve created a shopable fall lookbook filled with pieces I genuinely love and recommend. Everything in the lookbook is curated with fall family photos in mind: colors, textures, and silhouettes that photograph beautifully in natural light.
You’re welcome to purchase directly through those links (I do receive a small kickback when you do), but the bigger goal is to take the guesswork out of styling so you can feel confident and excited about what you’re wearing.
It’s meant to be a helpful starting point, not a rulebook.
If you’d prefer to borrow rather than shop, I also offer a client closet with select pieces available for all family members. This can be especially helpful if you’re feeling stuck or just want one less thing on your to-do list.
We can mix client closet items with your own clothing to create a look that still feels like you.
