Looking for a low-key summer filled with sunshine, snacks, and wonder? Portland has plenty of gems for families wanting simple fun with less stress. Here’s a roundup of things to do with kids in Portland this summer:
1. Berry Picking at Columbia Farms U-Pick (Sauvie Island)
Sauvie Island is a Portland classic in the summer. Head to Columbia Farms U-Pick to gather strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries by the basket. Let your kids run the rows and taste-test as they go. I love how kid-friendly this spot is.
2. Explore OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry)
Cool off inside OMSI with hands-on exhibits, a kid-specific science playground, and rotating exhibits that make learning feel like play. A go-to for curious kids of all ages. I have to feel brave to do OMSI with my two kids who seem to go in opposite directions at the speed of light, but I never regret visiting when we do.
3. Local Nature Walks
Portland is full of green spaces—try a forested stroll through Hoyt Arboretum, an easy loop at Tryon Creek, or a stroller-friendly walk around Laurelhurst Park. Bring binoculars or a nature scavenger hunt printable to keep little ones engaged.
4. Visit the Oregon Zoo
Tucked into Washington Park, the Oregon Zoo is always a hit. Walk shaded trails, see elephants and sea otters, and hop on the zoo train for a summer memory in the making. My boys also love the carousel, which I find to be a great incentive to keep things fun at the end of our visit.
5. Splash Pads & Wading Pools
Cool off with a visit to a Portland splash pad or wading pool. Try Peninsula Park or Elizabeth Caruthers Park for water play fun that’s just the right size for littles.
